Tips on Use of Your Shell Gift Card

Your Shell Gift Card should provide an enjoyable shopping experience at participating and/or authorized Shell US locations. Use of your gift card will be facilitated by the following tips on use. Click on the title to reveal the tip.

Remember that your Shell Gift Card is subject to terms and conditions that govern its use. For information on these terms and conditions, see Terms.

Remember that your Shell Gift Card is issued by the Card Issuer. For information about the Card Issuer, see Card Issuer.

Remember that your Shell Gift Card is redeemable only up to the available balance of the card. You should keep track of the card balance. For information on how to make balance inquiries, see Balance Inquiry.

Remember that your card is a single load card. As a result, after your card is purchased, you cannot add or load additional value to the card.

Remember that your Shell Gift Card is redeemable to purchase goods and/or services only at participating Shell locations inside the U.S., excluding territories. For information on Shell participating locations, visit www.buyshellgiftcards.com.

Remember that your Shell Gift Card is redeemable only to purchase goods and/or services and, is only redeemable for cash where required by law. A limited number of states have enacted statutes that require gift cards to be redeemable for cash in certain circumstances that are set forth in the statutes. Most of the statutes require gift cards to be redeemable for cash upon the consumer's request when the balance of the card is less than a specified dollar amount. For inquiries or additional information, see Contact Us.

Remember that your card is not allowed to make "card not present" purchases. As a result, you may NOT use the card to make on-line purchases or purchases over the phone.

Remember that your Shell Gift Card cannot be used in any illegal transaction. In addition, your gift card is not usable to purchase lottery tickets or money orders.

Remember that the initial available balance on your Shell Gift Card will be an amount set at the time of activation and/or purchase. Thereafter, the available balance will be reduced by each authorized use of the card or as otherwise provided in the terms and conditions except as prohibited by law.

Remember that if you use your Shell Gift Card to make a purchase for less than the available balance of the gift card, the remaining balance will not be paid in cash to you, unless a cash payment is otherwise required by law. See Tip on "Goods, Services, Cash" above.

Remember that if you use your Shell Gift Card to make a purchase that exceeds the available balance of the card, the transaction will be declined. Your gift card purchase must be equal to or less than the balance on the card. Your Shell Gift Card payment cannot be combined with other forms of payment.

Returns and Exchanges: Remember that any returns or exchanges of goods purchased with your gift card will be governed by the policies of Shell governing returns and exchanges.

Remember that establishments like gas stations also use prepayment “holds” when gift cards are used at their establishments in conjunction with advance preauthorized payments. For pay at the pump redemption, insert Card and follow instructions. Pay at the pump may not be possible if balance is less than one dollar. If you are having difficulty, present Card inside Shell location for payment. In addition, a gas station may ask that a “hold” be placed on a gift card used to prepay at the pump for gas. The amount of the “hold” in these circumstances may be an amount estimated to cover the goods or service. If the available balance on a gift card is not sufficient to cover the estimated amount for the goods or service, the gift card may be declined. If the available balance is sufficient, a “hold” may be placed for several days on the available balance in the amount of the estimated cost of the goods or services. During that time period, the gift card owner will not be able to use the amount that was placed on “hold” even if the estimated amount exceeds the actual cost of the goods or service.

Remember that after the passage of time which should be more than two years, your Shell Gift Card may be subject to a deactivation date under which the Shell Gift Card will be deactivated from immediate use at a cash register. The deactivation date is not an expiration date on the gift card balance. The available card balance as of the deactivation will remain available for your use. You may be required to exchange a deactivated gift card, at no charge, for a new Shell Gift Card in the amount of the available balance. If you have problems in obtaining a replacement gift card after deactivation, please contact us. See Contact Us.

Remember that if you have not used your gift card within a time period set by state law, the unused card balance may become subject to escheat under various state unclaimed property statutes. These time periods set by state law usually are two, three or five year periods. If the remaining card balance becomes unclaimed property subject to a state unclaimed property law, the Card Issuer may be required to escheat the card balance to a state in an amount and at the time required by the state law. At that time, you may lose the ability to use your gift card. If this occurs with respect to your gift card, you may inquire about the status of your card by contacting us. See Contact Us. For information about escheat and unclaimed property, visit www.unclaimed.org.

Remember that your card is a non-reloadable, limited-value and limited-use store card, and cash discounts may not apply. Additional funds may not be added to your card. It is not a credit card, a debit card, asset account, or a deposit account. Your Shell Gift Card is not a bank issued card. The funds loaded on the gift card are not segregated or kept in a fund pending use of the card. Therefore, the gift card obligation is not backed by segregated cash funds.

Remember to safeguard your Shell Gift Card. Although it is not cash, you should safeguard your gift card like cash. Your gift card is not subject to replacement if it is lost, stolen or damaged, and except in certain circumstances, your card will not be replaced or replenished if lost or stolen, and you will bear the risk of any lost, stolen or damaged gift card.
